Southampton Water Sailing Association Evening Series Race 8

by Chris Waddington 2 Sep 2009 10:17 UTC 31 July 2009

Close finish for penultimate SWSA race

The penultimate race in Southampton Water Sailing Association’s evening series for sailing yachts saw some very close racing between 11 boats representing 5 clubs.

At the gun, Jonathan Tickner and Peter Hairsnape’s Calypso was first over the line and took an early lead, holding this to the first buoy (Netley). On the long reach to NW Netley the fleet opened up a little with Alex Bell and Paul Bush’s Symphony rounding in first place closely followed by Glass Onion, Zipper, and Puma of Pagelsham. With Spinnakers deployed on the downwind leg to Hovercraft 2 the wind eased and with the backdrop of a magnificent sunset the course was duly shortened

At the line, Alex Bell and Paul Bush’s Beneteau 305 Symphony continued her winning ways in class 1, narrowly beating Stephen Webb’s Malbec 240 Puma of Paglesham by under a minute on corrected time. In class 2, Costantino Corbari’s Glass Onion scored her second successive win over her main rival Mat Girling’s Zipper by a mere 5 seconds. Significant wins for both Symphony and Glass Onion as in both classes the series points difference between first and second places is now just 1. Therefore the last race in a fortnight’s time promises a highly competitive finale.

The SWSA evening series is open to members of the 16 SWSA member clubs and to individual members of the RYA. For more information, please see www.swsa.org.uk
