Every year the Scorpion fleet runs a pro-am competition at the Nationals to help give the less experienced sailors in the fleet some free coaching from the top guys. After the first day’s competition the fleet are paired up so the top boat teams up with the back boat in the fleet, 2nd with the next furthest back and so on until the middle 2 teams are paired up. After each race during the rest of the series each pair scores a team result, comprising of the total of the 2 results achieved that day, with a prize for the team with the lowest score at the end of the week.

Not only do the back of the fleet benefit from some one on one help from a front of the fleet sailor but, with the overall trophy essentially going to the pair who improve the most from their first result, there is also plenty of incentive for teams throughout the fleet to help each other during the week.

This year’s Nationals sees the fleet returning to Lyme Regis from the 15th – 21st August for a week of racing and socialising. The pro-am event is returning as before but with an added bonus. After the pairings are announced on the first day each pairing has 24 hours to rearrange the boat park so their boats are side by side. All teams successfully doing this will be entered in a draw to win a free photograph (one each for both helms and crews) from the week courtesy of Fotoboat. The 2nd and 3rd pairs drawn will also win a free pint each at the bar (age permitting of course)!

Further details on the 2009 Scorpion Nationals including details of some big discounts for early entries can be found through www.sailscorpion.co.uk . Anyone interested in sailing but short of a boat / helm / crew should

Racing Sailboats, an institution right at the very heart of the UK dinghy sailing scene It is a sad fact of life that the sailors who were drivers at the heart of the so called 'golden era' of dinghy racing are getting older, but their ability to get together for an afternoon of fun and laughter is as strong as ever.
