Having had to scrape the frost off to the windscreen to drive to Canberra airport yesterday, it’s a pleasure to be in Mooloolaba for the Etchells Winters.
While the Sunshine coast locals are 'suffering' through their northern winter, when the 40 boat Etchells fleet face the starting gun off Moololaba's Main Beach tomorrow, the southern sailors will be eight degrees warmer than if they were sailing on Melbourne's Port Philip.
Now in its 17th year, the one design Etchells regatta has proven to be one of the most successful events on the calendar for this very competitive sailing class.
John Bertrand has won an Etchells World Championship and six Australian Etchells title, he is still looking for his first win here, but he will have to climb over the top of at least a dozen teams that could take the 2013 title.
We are back from the boat park and will provide news, quotes and images in the next few hours. Stay tuned!

Aussie in the drink - The incident in which America's Cup skipper, Jimmy Spithill, fell off Oracle Team USA's AC72 was not a safety drill.
