America's Cup: Luna Rossa opt for initial base alongside Artemis |
 |
Various news sources in San Francisco are reporting that the Italian America's Cup Challenger, Luna Rossa, will be moving into the disused sea plane base at Alameda. They will join the base's other tenant, Artemis Racing (SWE) but working out of another hangar. One source reports that the team have signed a three month initial lease, with an option to stay for a further year. Initially all teams were supposed to be based in a central area in San Francisco, in Piers 30-32, however due to a combination of slow decision making, budget cuts and other inertia, the original proposal for a single venue was overturned in October 2012. That decision meant that the teams were free to chose their locations. Subsequently a number of sponsor and fan facilities were shifted to Marina Green from their location on Piers 30-32 Luna Rossa Challenge sources confirmed that the team had leased space, but this was only to buy some time, and allow the team to get established in San Francisco ahead of a move to Pier 30-32 in June as planned. Sail-World was told that there had been no real changes to Luna Rossa's original plans, and they are currently sailng from their base in Auckland, New Zealand and doing race training with Emirates Team NZ. Emirates Team NZ are still intending to ship straight to Piers 30-32, and are expected to arrive in late May.
