Having had to scrape the frost off to the windscreen to drive to Canberra airport yesterday, it’s a pleasure to be in Mooloolaba for the Etchells Winters.

While the Sunshine coast locals are 'suffering' through their northern winter, when the 40 boat Etchells fleet face the starting gun off Moololaba's Main Beach tomorrow, the southern sailors will be eight degrees warmer than if they were sailing on Melbourne's Port Philip.

Now in its 17th year, the one design Etchells regatta has proven to be one of the most successful events on the calendar for this very competitive sailing class.

John Bertrand has won an Etchells World Championship and six Australian Etchells title, he is still looking for his first win here, but he will have to climb over the top of at least a dozen teams that could take the 2013 title.

We are back from the boat park and will provide news, quotes and images in the next few hours. Stay tuned!

In the Auckland Fiji Race:, Simon Hulls TeamVodafoneSailing has taken two hours off the race record with a new best time of 101 hours, 5 minutes and 5 seconds. Be great to see Sean Langman's Team Australia competing on the Kiwi multihull circuit in 2014 as has been suggested might happen.

Aussie in the drink - The incident in which America's Cup skipper, Jimmy Spithill, fell off Oracle Team USA's AC72 was not a safety drill.

Video now released by the team shows Spithill returning to take the helm of the AC72 during a gybe, catching hold of the wheel, but missing his footing and falling over the side. Spithill broke the steering wheel in the incident.

Meanwhile beleaguered America's Cup Challenger, Artemis Racing is back on the water on San Francisco Bay, after their fatal training incident over three weeks ago.

Nathan Outteridge and the team are sailing a foil equipped AC45, restarting their sailing program, while their second AC72 is prepared for sailing.

Lots more news and great video too.
