'Ken Gourlay’s current position'
|
While the sailing world’s eyes are on the quest by Tony Bullimore to break the round the world speed record, starting in Tasmania sometime this month, there is a home-grown Tasmanian quietly already half way round the same route. Ken Gourlay is a 51 year-old Tasmanian yachtsman who left Tasmania on November 6th to begin a personal quest to sail his yacht Spirit Silver Edition solo non-stop and unassisted around the world in an easterly direction. He passed Cape Horn during Christmas, and is now heading for the equator. A long time member of the Tamar Yacht Club, he is a very experienced in dinghy sailing, ocean racing and extended cruising, with over 40,000 nautical miles currently in his log book. In preparation for the solo circumnavigation, Ken recently competed in the Melbourne to Vanuatu ocean race testing the boat, equipment, foods and most importantly, himself.
