The final day of racing at the Rhodes Waterside Farr 40 regatta and Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban have made it two for two winning the first two regattas for the Australian Farr 40 season. The eight boat fleet started racing on the last day in a 13 knot southerly breeze that progressively swung to the sou’east and lightened in strength for the final three races of the series. Race six of the series and Ivan Wheen’s Sputnik dominated the lead position for the duration of the race. Ichi Ban improved from an initial third place to cross the line in second and Leon Christianakis’s Cydon recovered from a seventh at the second mark rounding to finish third. Lang Walker’s Kokomo made all the right moves in race seven to slowly pick off the competition and move from seventh to win the race. Ichi Ban again sailed consistently picking the shifts to finish second while Don Telford’s Rushcutter, sailed well to maintain their top three spot and finish third. The final race of the series and every crew was tested as they played a difficult chess game on the water. Positions at mark roundings fluctuated vastly with boats moving up and down the positions. Ichi Ban again picked the right side of the course to take the race and the regatta win while Cydon again hauled themselves up the places to maneuver from sixth to second across the line. Sputnik slipped down a couple of positions but managed to finish on the podium and take second place for the regatta. “It’s been a fun regatta with plenty of challenging conditions over the three days and really close racing. We have a couple of new crew members who fitted into the team well”, commented Allen at prize presentation. The next event on the Australia Farr 40 calendar is the Farr 40 Pittwater Regatta being hosted by Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club November 11 and 12.
