The superfast new Alfa Romeo maxi yacht, skippered by Neville Crichton, blitzed her competition today with nearly a half-hour win over Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats and Steven David’s Wild Joe in the second race of the Hamilton Island Hahn Premium Race Week.

Light breezes and strong tidal currents forced regatta organizers to shorten the 59-mile course by two miles to avoid yachts drifting backwards in the homeward stretch down the narrow Dent Passage.

The fleet of 207 yachts set off this morning in pristine conditions for the longest races of the week-long regatta. The majority of the IRC, Premier Cruising, IRC Cruising, Sydney 38 OD and PHS fleet are expected to finish into the night.

Alfa Romeo finished at 16:38:39

Wild Oats finished at 17.07.21

Wild Joe finished at 17.17.58
Yachts are presently crossing the finish line in Catseye Bay in the company of a mother whale and two newborn calves.

Tomorrow is a lay-day on Hamilton Island with crews taking the opportunity to fine-tune their yachts and relax at a Moet and Chandon lunch.

The Australian Tourism Award winning Hamilton Island Hahn Premium Race Week continues on Hamilton Island until Saturday afternoon.
