The ISAF World Sailor of the Year Awards was held on Tuesday 12th November. Having being nominated twice before in 2010 and 2012, it proved to be third time lucky for Mathew Belcher, Australian Olympic and World champion in the 470 dinghy class, whose current winning streak stretches to an amazing 17 consecutive regattas.

'It's a complete honour,' said Belcher during the awards ceremony held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. 'It's great recognition for this year and the efforts we've put in and the results we've achieved. I am very fortunate to have great support, from my coach Victor Kovalenko, crew and support staff.'

470 sailors were also rewarded in the female category of the Awards. The New Zealand pairing of Jo Aleh and Olivia 'Polly' Powrie are the current women's Olympic and World champions in the Class.

An Olympic Class Revolution - A very significant restructure proposal designed to change the nature of Olympic class sailing competitions at all levels is being presented to the ISAF Council this week in Muscat, Oman.

This proposal, if accepted will have a major impact on the current ISAF Sailing World Cup events and other major events like Weymouth's Sail for Gold.

EUROSAF President Marco Predieri is a strong supporter of the ISAF proposal as he explained to Sail-World.com. Read more inside...

GBR’s Nick Thompson, with three World Championship medals already under his belt is in no doubt as to where his sights lie heading into next week’s Laser World Championships in Oman (17-23 November). The 27-year-old is aiming for his first world title at the Al-Mussanah Sports City, having made the podium at the last three World Championships he’s contested, in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Having missed the 2012 event following an appendix operation, Thompson is keen to make 2013 the year he claims the elusive world title, but knows he’ll have strong competition on his hands from a number of quarters.

Sailor Paul Campbell-James has booked his place in the grand final of the 2013 RYA National Match Racing Championships as his crew claimed event honours at the final qualifier event of this year’s Series. The Southampton based sailor skippered his team of Chris Draper, Sam Richmond, Dan Gohl and Archie Goodwin to RYA National Match Racing Qualifier 1 triumph at Queen Mary Sailing Club (QMSC) this past weekend (9-10 November).

Being an RYA National Class, the National Squib Owners Association (NOSA) are a traditionally strong association with a healthy membership and one of the highest participation numbers in their national championships. Whilst some classes have a number of different builders producing boats, the Squib has been built since 2009 by BP Sailboats based in Essex. Unfortunately, there have been a recent series of events which have led to the RYA having to withdraw the licence issued to BP Sailboats. Read more inside…

It has been a remarkably successful year for the Royal Southern Yacht Club, especially on the water. Amongst the many notable winners, Niklas Zennström became Mini Maxi and Gaastra 52 World Champion, Edward Leask took the Gazprom Swan European title in Class A, James Wilkie became 40.7 National Champion and Philip Bendon took the EUROSAF Youth Match Racing crown.

The 44th annual Peg Legs Round Tortola Race organised by the Royal BVI Yacht Club and sponsored by Nanny Cay, will take place on Saturday, November 23rd. Three classes - racing, cruising and multihull - will compete in the 37-mile race. The first warning for the start will be at 9am in the Sir Francis Drake Channel off Nanny Cay. The fleet will then head anti-clockwise around Tortola. After the beat up the Sir Francis Drake Channel, the fleet will turn the corner at Great Camanoe and head on a downwind run to West End where, after a quick wiggle through Soper’s Hole, it will be a beat back to the finish line off Nanny Cay.

The RYA is delighted to announce the appointment of Nigel King as the RYA Racing Keelboat Manager - a new and exciting position within the RYA Racing Department. King, who possesses a wealth of experience as both a sailor and a coach, was carefully selected by the Royal Yachting Association to plan, support and develop the sport of keelboat racing across the United Kingdom. With 25 years of racing/coaching experience under his belt, King has managed and coached racing teams at top international level both offshore and inshore.
