THAT cartwheel, Team Australia sets new World Record and the Hobart

Today we have a feature piece on Paul Shultz and Gill Australia. Paul certainly product tested the Gill gear in his nine years on the 18 footers. The video of the 2007 Asko Appliances 18 footer cartwheel is a ripper. Paul was the sheethand and says he can still feel the aches watching it six years later.

Talked to Sean Langman yesterday about the Sydney Auckland record set by Team Australia, now ratified by the WSSR Council, the two day 19 hour 2 mins and 45 second record for the 1265 nautical mile trip, they averaged almost 19 knots. They could have been faster but for a shark and sunfish. Will publish that interview towards the end of the week.

A surprisingly large fleet for the 69th Hobart, Wild Oats XI is going to be tested by Anthony Bell's new Loyal, by Ragamuffin 100 and by Wharro’s Wild Thing.

The addition of the 12 Clipper boats and Sir Robin Knox Johnson's entry will certainly add an extra flavour to this year’s race.

New boats in Matt Allen's Ichiban, the new Carkeek 60 currently on a ship a few days from Sydney and Karl Kwok's replacement Beau Geste. Will be telling you much more about both these two entries in coming days.

The ISAF Rolex Sailor of the Year Awards will be decided in Oman next week at the ISAF Annual Conference. We have two Australian nominations Mat Belcher, who will be aiming for his 18th straight regatta win at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne regatta next month and Paul Larsen, the fastest sailor in the world.

Ahead of that event, we´ve transcribed the acceptance speech from Lijia Xu, the Chinese Laser Radial Gold medallist, who was crowned Womens Sailor of the Year in 2012. Her speech was one of the most eloquent we’ve ever heard from a sailor. It is a must read. Hope we hear one half as good from either Mat or Paul.

Lots of news, as always. So get into it.
