'Frustration' is the key descriptor for the 84 skippers assembled in Douarnenez, France for the alleged start of the Mini Transat Race. A series of weather systems have been hammering the Bay of Biscay, preventing the 21-foot speedsters from safely beginning their leg-one sprint to Puerto Celero in the Canary Islands.

According to the latest reports, the event organizers are now looking for a weather window early next week to get the fleet launched. Inside, get the latest news from this famous international event, and stay tuned for the latest news on the start, as it becomes known.

Also offshore-related, US Sailing’s Safety at Sea Committee recently reviewed (read: overhauled) ISAF’s Offshore Special Regulations, which describes the equipment that should be required for vessels that are participating in most local and offshore racing. 'I believe that the new [requirements] meet those criteria, and will serve offshore sailors well,' said Chuck Hawley, US Sailing's Safety at Sea Committee Chairman. 'We encourage all Organizing Authorities to use them, edited if the local conditions warrant, so that races in the U.S. are sailed under consistent equipment rules.'

Meanwhile, the Volvo Ocean Race recently offered an update on the extremely competitive selection process for the position of Onboard Reporter for the 2014/2015 edition. According to reports, the race has already made their round-one cuts, and the talent pool is rumored to be deep.

So what the best move for anyone on the waiting list? 'My advice to the candidates: don’t wait!' says Rick Deppe, who is project managing the media program, and who is a former media crewmember himself, having sailed aboard Puma Ocean Racing in the 2008/2009 edition.

'Go on with your life and your projects to keep training, sailing and telling stories,' continues Deppe. 'There are so many great candidates for a limited number of positions, so just keep telling great stories and having adventures. That's still the best way to win a place on a boat as our Onboard Reporter.' Get the full story, inside.

Finally, I recently caught up with Ken Read, President of North Sails, World Champion sailor and the unofficial Don of the Newport Sailing Mafia, to get his pulse on sailmaking in the post-Lehman Brothers era. Look for this interview as an exclusive three-part feature that will be running on Sail-World.com every other day for the next few days. Enjoy!

May the four winds blow you safely home,
