Unbelievable Belcher

'470 men’s crew Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan in Holland'    Sander Van Der Borch

On the final day of the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, Holland, Australian sailors have won a gold and a silver medal with 470 sailor Mathew Belcher extending his winning run to 15 straight events.

This is an amazing result especially considering the very unpopular experimental scoring system which has been running in recent Olympic class regattas. In this event Belcher and his crew Will Ryan had won seven of the 11 races but in spite of that domination, they took just a single point lead into the double points medal races.

17 year old Matthew Wearn won silver in the Laser class. Tom Burton finished just off the podium in fourth in the Lasers with Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin sixth in the Nacra 17.

Multihulls are definitely leading the way in the sailing market, as Mark Elkington from Multihull Solutions and Brent Vaughan from Multihull Central with five brands between them agree.

Kim McKee from Multihull Solutions commented ‘For many family buyers, a lot more boat, a lot more comfort when sailing and a lot more speed are winning factors these days.’

Looking ahead many of the major industry players are expecting Sydney International Boat Show 2013 will be one of the most heavily supported in recent years.

The 12th annual Koh Samui Regatta kicks off today. The very strong group of Asian-based 40-footers are lining up in IRC One including last year’s winner EFG Bank Mandrake (HKG). They are up against Foxy Lady VI (SIN), Windsikher (SIN) and two Sydney GTS 43´s Walawala two (SIN) and Elektra (HKG).

In the IRC Two class Matt Allen's Ichi Ban (AUS) has been unstoppable in Thai waters over the last 12 months with three-from-three class victories.

Plenty more news ahead with the next major event the Etchells Winter Australasian Championships in Mooloolaba next week. John Bertrand who has won six Australian titles is looking for his first winter win. The Sail-World team will be on the water for that event as it has been for many years. www.mooetchells.yachting.org.au
