Three Peaks Race - Excitement aplenty on first leg

'Three Peaks record breaker Peccadillo passing Low Head at the mouth of the Tamar River'    Paul Scrambler

The first leg of the 25th H&R Block Three Peaks Race has been exciting for both runners and sailors. Victorian crew Peccadillo were fast out of the mouth of the Tamar River in 45 minutes followed by Chamberlain catamaran Euphoria Furniture.

It was a record-breaking run to Lady Barron, Flinders Island for both crews, with Peccadillo dropping runners on dry land at 8.50pm, one hour and 20 minutes ahead of the previous stretch record.

The run up Mount Strezeleki was a challenge for runners, navigating their way through bush in the dark.

Peccadillo runners Daniel Trevena and Phil Sicklinger, first time Mount Strezeleki climbers, seemed comfortable heading into the leg, reaching the base camp around 11.45pm.

Euphoria Furniture, who was one hour behind Peccadillo, were able to make up 30 minutes on the running leg, arriving at 5.11am.

Cables Plus Tas – MS Tas and Advant Edge runners were back at the dock around 6.30am, followed by St LukesHealth at 7.42am.

'Conditions in Lady Barron this morning are ideal for the 65-kilometre run up Mount Strezelekic,’’ race director Raoul Stow said.

' The 145 nautical mile southerly leg to Coles Bay from Lady Barron throws its own unique challenges starting with the easterly departure from Franklin Sound where the yachts have a choice of ploughing east through the Pot Boil or south-east skirting Vansittart Island.’’
