Multis, Match Racing and Worlds—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

In Grand Prix multi-hull news, 'Musandam-Oman Sail', skippered by Sidney Gavignet (FRA), won the 1030-mile Leg Four (Cascais to Marseille) of the MOD 70 European Tour, thus increasing the team’s overall series standings to third place (tied with 'Race for Water'). According to reports, the strategically 'complicated' leg (and its aftermath) featured a bit of everything, from nearly becalmed airs to a 40-knot blast that threatened to define the term 'vanishing stability'. Acording to reports, great navigation and sharp light-air sailing skills separated the fleet of identical trimarans.

'I am happy,' reported Gavignet. 'It was only after the finish line that I really thought we had done it. Even on the passage back past the rocky islands from Cassis we had a big 40-knots gust and we nearly lost it. We had to dump the main and [we still] barely held on to it. There is a lot of emotion because these beasts are hard work. I believed in this win. It is a team thing, so congratulations to all of us. It was gained off Cape St Vincent. We have made such progress in light winds.'

Currently, Michel Desjoyeaux’s 'Foncia' is topping the overall series’ leaderboard, followed by Stève Ravussin’s 'Race for Water' in second and Musandam-Oman Sail and Race for Water in third. Get the full report, inside this issue.

Meanwhile, the 'l’Hydroptère DCNS' team has announced their decision to postpone their attempt at the LA to Honolulu record until 2013, due to uncooperative weather patterns. 'Of course we’re disappointed,' said Alain Thébault, skipper of the flying trimaran. 'We knew it would be tight... In the end, we missed out on the mid-July weather window by just one week... That’s the name of the game with a project like this! It’ll be a different story next year as we’ll already be on site, really raring to go.' More, inside.

And in match-racing news, full-value conditions have been defining the Match Race France, which is currently taking place in Marseille. Currently, Peter Gilmour (AUS) is leading the talent-rich fleet after five straight wins pulled his team back from the edge of elimination. 'We had a great day today and I think the boys did a really fabulous job,' said Gilmour. 'The key thing was always going to be keeping stable, alive and not capsize or losing by crew error. We just concentrated on keeping the boat upright.'

Closer to home, the 12 Metre North Americans recently concluded on the historic waters off of Newport, Rhode Island, where Cup legends including Dennis Conner, Ted Turner, Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson gathered to race aboard some of the classiest boats afloat. Not surprisingly, 'DC' and his 'Kiwi Magic ' (KZ-7) took top honors in the Grand Prix class, beating out KZ-5 and USA. 'The boats are all pretty evenly matched; whoever gets ahead is hard to pass,' said Conner. 'We started in front, though, and we know how to stay there.' Get the full report, inside.
