Day One abandoned after one flight - Bavaria International

With a return to winter in Sydney today, crews contesting the Bavaria Yachts International Youth Match Racing Regatta braved the icy winds, rain and even hail until mid morning when the Race Committee called it a day.

With this afternoon’s forecast of strengthening southerly breezes up to 30 knots, the Committee, much to the relief of the wet and cold competitors, decided one flight was enough and abandoned racing.

Chief Umpire David Tallis jokingly referred to day one of the Bavaria Yachts International as 'European match racing at its finest'.

Early wins are on the board for the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Will Ryan and Lucinda Whitty, one of three female skippers challenging who beat the more favoured Nina Curtis. Will Ryan has already enjoyed plenty of attention this week having been announced as one of the youth crew sailing in this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart aboard CYCA member Graeme Wood’s Sydney 47 Wot’s Next.

Unfortunately Ryan had to dispose of club mate and regatta favourite, current Australian youth match racing champion Evan Walker, to claim a win this morning. Walker lost valuable time returning to restart his one and only race today mistakenly thinking he had broken the start.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Garth Ellingham, a talented match racing skipper, also claimed his first scalp today as did Ed Quartly representing the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

The Royal Prince Alfred’s Andrew Hudson, a relatively new name amongst the line up, scored the fifth and final win of the day.

Strong to gale force southerly winds are expected to continue over the New South Wales coast for much of today but should ease to 15-20 knots tomorrow and return to more traditional late Spring weather in Sydney with winds forecast to be light and variable on Saturday and a strong nor’easterly sea breeze due in the afternoon. The regatta will conclude Sunday 19 November.

Racing is due to recommence early at 0950am tomorrow, Friday 17 November, in the Rushcutters Bay vicinity.
