The Optimist World Championship 2012 third day of competition started promisingly for the 230 young sailors and the race committee did not miss that chance. The boats hit the water early in the morning and the races started.

After many general and partial recalls the groups managed to complete one race each. The wind was around 10-12 knots and at the end of the race started to change and dropped dramatically. Singapore’s Neo Samuel Jiun Jie scored a bullet and climbed on the top of the leaderboard but in a tie with its compatriot Yojoyama Elisa Yukie that finished second in the race. In third place is Goh Jessica Kai Ling also from Singapore that scored a tenth place at the race. Bart Lambriex from Nederland’s dropped several places from third that he was yesterday due to his 16th place today.

Local athlete Pacheco Maria Justina is still at the back of the leaderboard in 103rd place, but has a DNF race that she will discard after five races are competed and will be closer to the top. The Pacheco family counts three members at Dominican’s Republic National Team with Justina’s younger brother and sister having their first experience at a World Championship.

After the first race was completed the wind died and the sailors had to wait until it picked up again. Most of them did not miss the chance to dive at the clear waters of the Caribbean while waiting. Nonetheless a storm followed with heavy rain and the race committee decided to call it a day. The young athletes returned to the port and packed their equipment. Tomorrow is the last day of fleet racing that will decide the teams to compete at the Team Racing on Saturday. Don’t miss the chance to find out the teams qualified!!
