Marine fish habitat fun for inside the classroom

Students and teachers now have a new way to explore through mangrove forests, search for sea animals and learn about different fishing techniques without leaving the classroom. Senior Fisheries Officer Rebecca Sheppard said Fisheries Queensland had developed a new and exciting activity booklet that focused on the importance of protecting marine fish habitats. 'This activity booklet is a great educational resource for teachers and parents to educate students about looking after our marine fish habitats to ensure fishing for the future,' Ms Sheppard said. 'The free to download booklet has fun activities and educational information about Queensland’s marine habitats and the fish that depend on these. 'The activities are designed to develop knowledge and encourage students to take greater interest in caring for Queensland’s coasts. 'Our coasts’ marine fish habitats provide shelter, food and nursery grounds for fish and other marine fauna such as crabs and prawns. 'All marine fish habitats, including marine plants, are community assets that depend on ongoing protection and management to ensure their sustainability.' The booklet was developed for primary school students in the middle to upper grades. Ms Sheppard said the aim was to teach people about the importance of fish habitats when they’re young to help them adopt best practice as part of their everyday lives. 'Without healthy marine fish habitats, no one would be able to enjoy Queensland’s great fishing spots and delicious seafood,' Ms Sheppard said. 'Everyone plays an important part in the sustainability of Queensland fisheries, especially our children, who will be able to look after these habitats into the future.'
