Sail-World.com : Vic Maui 2012 underway
The Vic Maui Race 2012 is now underway. The race, called the Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race or Vic Maui for short, was first contested in 1968 runs every second year. The race starts in June or July off Victoria, British Columbia and finishes near Lahaina, Maui. The distance is approximately 2,308 nautical miles. Overall 2012 fleet numbers are up from those of previous years. There were just nine boats in 2008 and 2010; the 2012 fleet stands at 14 boats. In the five races from 1998 through 2006 there was an average of 19 boats. The 2012 fleet composition is nine Canadian and five American boats; 11 in the Racing division and three in the Cruising division. The Racing Division started on July 7 in a light westerly, but had a favourable current for a few hours to get through Race Passage and into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Double Take leads the Line Honors, is first Overall and in Racing division A. A large spectator fleet was on hand to see the fleet off on a beautiful day with the snow caps of the Olympic Mountains in the background. The Cruising Division started on July 5, under bright sunny skies off Brotchie Ledge near Victoria. Ballymack currently leads from Radiance, with Big Ben third. Grand Illusion skippered by James McDowell of the LYC, is the current race record holder, set in 2000 at 9 days, 2 hours and 8 minutes. Vic Maui website
