'2012 RS:X Open Youth Windsurfing Championships'    Liis Harmson

RS:X Youth European Championships 2012 are being held from 30th June until 7th July in Tallinn, Estonia. Here in the land of the white nights, the day dawns early, really early and it brought with it cloud and rain plus a good breeze. This was most welcome after a registration day of flat calm, blazing sun and no practice race.

The sailors were ready to race but the wind was in a teasing mood. Up went the AP postponement at 1030hrs. The sun was burning off the cloud and the wind was shifting and filling in the process so after a short wait the fleets went out together to race on a windward/leeward course with the slalom end set above the start boat.

First to start were the youth men in 6-8 knots. They lined up but had mistaken slalom mark 2 for the pin-end having not had the chance to see the set up the day before. No harm done. The PRO Madis Ausman postponed. Let everyone settle down and started the sequence again. This time the sailors had realized their initial mistake and the second attempt went off smoothly under an I flag...

The currrent RS:X Youth World Champion, Pawel Tarnowski [POL] has not lost his edge since last year, finishing the day with a perfect scoreline... Three bullets.

Behind him things are not so clear cut. Kieran Martin [GBR] is second on 11 points with Mattia Camboni [ITA] in third just one point behind. It's between these three right now but things may change with the weather forecast to be light tomorrow.

The light wind specialists from Israel, Imry Katz and Amir Galilili are well placed to mix it with the top guys.

Over in the Youth Women's fleet, it's Veronica Fanciulli [ITA} who is determined to make up the loss suffered last night by her national football team at the European Championships. She leads by two points from Saskia Sills [GBR] and Anastasiya Valekevich [BLR] but the Polish who have reigned supreme in the last two years have two new young sailors in touch.

First Comes Basia Dmuchowska who shares the same points as Anastasia and then Natalia Kacprzyk 5 points back.
They say that you cannot win a championship on the first day but you can certainly lose it. Blanca Alabau [ESP] will have to race at the same level as her famous elder sister Marina if she is going to climb into contention by the end of the week.

The first discard floats. Up to the 12th race, the worst result is discarded. Then the second discard kicks in and the discards become fixed. The first must be taken from the first six races and the second from the remainder. Whether we get there is another matter but that should help you figure out who is going to rise and who is going to slide and when.

Racing is scheduled to start tomorrow at 1100hrs and the forecast is for 6 knots as it could be for a day or two.
