Yachting Australia (YA) Tackers program, a program aimed at getting more primary school aged kids between 6 and 12 years sailing at yacht clubs across the country, is to be run at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. The Youthsail Program run by Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club is the first club in Queensland to be approved to operate the program.

YA CEO Phil Jones stated ‘Tackers has been developed with a customer focus – primary aged children – and with reference to successful programs in other countries and sports. It has adopted best practice principles from other sports including games-based learning, contemporary presentation and participation pathways’.

Daisy Brooke, YA National Participation Manager commented ‘I acknowledge the excellent work undertaken to date by Youthsail in providing more opportunities for people to participate in sailing. I particularly commend the outstanding record the club has in attracting juniors to the sport’.

Tackers was endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission in 2011 and Youthsail is very excited about the pending delivery of the 10 new Tackers dinghy’s with the first course set to start on Saturday 1st September.

The objective of the Tackers program is to attract a significant number of children to sailing, especially those who would not otherwise participate and have them progress through the three main levels of the learn to sail program and hopefully onto to non-competitive participation and long term club membership.

The Tackers 1- Having Fun course will be limited to a small group of 20 kids with an eight week Saturday morning program delivered by professional, Yachting Australia qualified instructors and assistant instructors. Kids receive Tackers T-Shirt, Water Bottle and Hat plus a Certificate upon completion.

After sailing in pairs in Tackers 1 the kids progress to the Tacklers 2 – Tricks and Techniques and then Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast sailing in the boat alone but with close supervision and instruction from staff.

The first course is already filling fast and interested parents should contact the sailing office on sailing(at)nyrc.com.au or go to the on-line booking link on the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club website.
