'The Titanic - her appeal today, nearly 100 years after she sailed, is poignant and universal.'

Despite initial scepticism, the plans for Titanic II – the 21st century version of the ill-fated ship – have moved one step closer to completion, with Queensland tycoon Clive Palmer selecting a design firm, Finnish-based Deltamarin. The company will undertake a full review to ensure the vessel will be compliant with all current safety and construction regulations. Palmer announced in April that he would fund the design and build of Titanic II with exactly the same dimensions as its predecessor, which sank 100 years ago causing the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew. Deltamarin will be in charge of ensuring the design criteria laid down by Palmer’s newly formed Blue Star Line are met. China's CSC Jinling Shipyard will be responsible for the construction of Titanic II, at 270 metres long, 53 metres high and weighing 40,000 tonnes. It will have 840 rooms and nine decks. The maiden commercial voyage is scheduled for 2016 between England and North America and Palmer said more than 20,000 people have already expressing interest in buying passage onboard.
