Mid Winter Series - Tight racing and hot soup at Sorrento SC

Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club ran its first Off the Beach Mid Winter Regatta on the Mornington Peninsula over the Queens Birthday Weekend.

Over 50 youth sailors braved the cold, rainy conditions to be rewarded with close racing across the four classes of Minnow, Optimist, Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial's with several of the classes seeing overall results decided on countbacks. The yacht club also used the opportunity to officially launch its new start boat 'Volunteer'.

Volunteer was built by Tim 'Dr Boat' Phillips Wooden Boat Shop where many Couta Boats are built or restored. The popularity of the new start boat saw a queue forming to be a race official probably a first in sailing circles. No doubt this was due in part to Volunteer having a functioning coffee machine onboard!

Race results were as follows:
Minnow
Ist Hayden Harding, second Laura Hayden, third Josh Copeland, fourth Finn Hartnett, fifth Harry Fox

Optimist
1st Steven Case, second Lachie Evenden, third Hamish Fleetwood, fourth Nick Joel, fifth Tyrone Gowans

Laser 4.7
1st Will Fox, second Jasper Pluim, third Sam Hannah

Laser Radial
1st Anna Phillip, second Ben Hartnett
