The Australian Optimist team has arrived in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka to compete in the 2012 Asian Championships, 2-10 June. The team of consists of Western Australian Sarah Kirke (SOPYC/SFC), Queenslanders Shon Mori (RQYS) ,Max Quirk (RQYS) and New South Wales competitors Harley Walters (RPAYC), Finn Alexander (WSC), Jaime Swavley (DAC). Unfortunately Alec Brodie broke his leg whilst training the Saturday before leaving and was unable to attend the event much to his disappointment. The team met up after arriving in the capital city of Colombo at midnight local time and travelled by minibus the 250km and 8 hour drive across to the North East Coast of Sri Lanka to the Chaaya Blu Resort in Trincomalee on eightthe Bay of Bengal. Other countries competing include the USA, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Honk Kong, China, India, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Chinese Taipei a total of 80 entries. Today teams are picking up their charter boats, going through measurement and tuning on water. Sunday is the opening ceremony and practice race, followed by five days of racing and a lay day scheduled for Thursday. Twelve races are scheduled, maximum of four per day. In the days leading up to the regatta sailors have enjoyed good westerly winds up to twenty knots which we’re hoping hold in for the week. Coach Tom Brewer is the Team Coach supported by Country Representative Rob Quirk, who is preparing the team both on and off the water. Temperatures have been very hot and humid with some other countries team members succumbing to heat stroke. Racing will be off the beach in front of the beautiful Chaaya Blu Resort. Tracking of competitors is available through the link on the official website www.iodaasian2012.yasl.org and you can follow sailor’s comments and photos on the blog www.dinghyfever.com Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
