Making a Splash – Brisbane Boat Show Set to Celebrate 52 Years!

The mining boom credited with injecting valuable monies to Australia’s regional communities and flagging retail sector is also proving to be a catalyst for a renaissance for the boating industry with more interest in all things marine than ever before.

With the second Mackay Marine Festival incorporating the Mackay Tinnie and Tackle Show and Mackay Offshore Superboat Championships set for June 23 and 24 Marine Queensland Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Don Jones said the association’s market research had shown an upswing in the interest of boats.

Mr Jones said it was immediately noticeable in the flow on effect from last year’s inaugural Mackay Show when there was an increase in boat registrations in the region by 300%.

'This year we celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the 2012 Brisbane Boat Show at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 23-26 August and already we have had unprecedented enquiry through our web site from both exhibitors and public keen to lock the dates away,' Mr Jones said.

'Events like the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show keep up the momentum for the boating calendar. This year Marine Queensland has added another event to our calendar – a first for the Brisbane area – an on the water show at Manly Harbour 21-23 September.

'Power, Sail, Paddle 2012 is a new event on Queensland’s boat show calendar and is part of a two year transition to shift the Brisbane Boat Show to an outdoors, on water venue more suited to showcasing the marine recreation lifestyle and the various products available to access that highly desirable lifestyle.

'It is an outdoors showcase aimed at generating leads and sales from those who may not have considered boating in the past – with interactive displays, demonstrations and activities, it is designed to give people a taste of the boating lifestyle and will complement the Brisbane Boat Show in 2012.

'Marine Queensland is the peak state recreational marine industry body so we are mindful our events should reflect and represent the whole industry but also involve the community in an event that is a celebration of all things nautical.

'Members have indicated that they are ready for change. Power, Sail, Paddle is the stepping stone to this change and the way boat shows are held in Brisbane.

'There has been tremendous interest for the new show so we have reduced our exhibition rates for the 2012 Brisbane Boat Show to assist exhibitors and make it easier for them to attend both events during this transition period.

'When you invest in an event run by an industry association your dollar works for you twice, once for the event and for the second time when the industry association works on your behalf.'

The Brisbane Boat Show is a retail showroom event aimed at generating leads and sales from those who have already made the decision to engage in a boating lifestyle. The transition aims to ensure that sales momentum is achieved in these challenging times while building participation rates in marine recreation.

The Brisbane Boat Show started at City Hall in 1961 with only 11 exhibitors.

Marine Queensland Events manager Jason Plant said boat shows were more than about selling boats:

'They are an opportunity to showcase Queensland’s recreational marine industry to consumers, investors and the government and to promote recreational boating as an activity of choice for Queensland residents,' Mr Plant said.

'Boating is about freedom and escape: the freedom away from stresses of life, freedom to do what you want. It is also about family and friends because our research shows rarely do people go boating alone.

'It is also something many generations can do together like grandparents fishing with grandchildren so the Brisbane Boat Show should reflect all of that. The move to the water makes it more than a boat show – but a celebration of a wonderful lifestyle.'
