'2012 Coach of the Year Matthew Jerwood'
|
The annual Yachting WA awards night was held on Friday 11th May 2012 at Royal Perth Yacht Club. During the ceremonies, the 2012 Coach of the Year was named. Nominees included Evelyn Doernberg - nominated by Nedlands Yacht Club, David Gilmour - nominated by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, and Matthew Jerwood - nominated by Fremantle Sailing Club. Matthew Jerwood has successfully coached a range of classes, age groups and sailors of all skill levels over the course of 2011. He is a popular, responsible and dedicated coach who engages with each of the sailors he coaches. Matthew is sensitive to the motivation of his pupils catering for the needs of all; the social sailors through to those who strive for excellence. Through his patient and systematic approach Matthew has encouraged a young group of Optimist sailors fresh from the bronze fleet into successful and competitive silver fleet sailors. His pupils trust him to take them beyond their comfort zone to expand their capabilities and develop into successful confident young sailors. Matthew is equally skilled in coaching the high performance Optimist and 420 sailors demonstrating why he was twice a 420 class national champion. He also coached a relatively inexperienced youth group from Shenton College to third place in the Australian Secondary Schools Team Racing Championship. Matthew’s calm and engaging manner and capacity to explain the basics through to the highly technical, captivate the attention of those he coaches. He teaches sailors to enjoy success and, with renewed determination, deal with failure. He promotes positive life values such as team work, cooperation and good sportsmanship and encourages children to develop positive self-images. Matthew is a mature young man and an outstanding role model for sailors of all ages.
