MHYC Sydney City Marine Winter Series returns for 2012

'SCM Winter Series Start line 5th May 2012 - MHYC Sydney City Marine Winter Series 2012'    Pip Lodder
Sydney City Marine has returned to support the 2012 Winter Series at Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) with the first race of the series held last Saturday 5 May.

The Sydney City Marine Winter Series welcomes Club racers and cruisers and encourages yachts from neighbouring Clubs to participate either as a Series entrant or as a Casual entrant.

The ten race Saturday series runs through to Saturday 14 July 2012 and offers two drops to series entrants. There will be no racing over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend (9, 10 and 11 June).

Weekly place-getters will be rewarded with a great range of Winter gear from Sydney City Marine, with the Sydney City Marine Perpetual Trophy for the overall divisional winners.

Racing is on the ‘Sound of Sydney Harbour’, with a First Warning Signal at 1200 hours. Course lengths are specifically tailored to wind strength. The series offers IRC and PHS results and divisions are determined to ensure competitive racing delivered to all competitors.

Divisions: Division 1 - IRC and PHS Spinnaker; Division 2 - PHS Spinnaker; Division 3 - PHS Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker/Cruising

Week One Race Report - from our on water race reporter, Phil Clinton:
SCM Winter Series Start 5th May 2012 - MHYC Sydney City Marine Winter Series 2012 -  Pip Lodder
Well Hughie who had most of the summer off was sure to let us know that it was now Winter sailing. On a cold and windy day he even whipped up some swell to make the trips across the heads a bit more exciting.

The three divisions approached the start in 15 gusting 20 knots of cold southerly. The start team set course 8. This was going to be a testing course.

A reasonably clean start from all divisions saw the fleets head out towards South Head for the first of six crossings of the heads. The long work from the North Harbour start to Lady Bay had yachts guessing how big a kite they would need for the run to the Inflatable at Grotto Point. The breeze a constant high teen had some yachts dropping their kites before the gybe at Grotto. Those that did not seemed to have varying degrees of difficulties getting to Manly West.

SCM Winter Series kite action 5th May 2012 - MHYC Sydney City Marine Winter Series 2012 -  Pip Lodder
There were some interesting kite handling techniques on display. Most ended in yachts sailing bear headed or with nicely wrapped kites. The work back to Cannae and on to Lady Bay saw the wind increase to early twenties. The left hand side appeared to be favoured and those that stayed left of centre faired better. The next directly back to Cannae was less eventful that the first run. But still a few yachts were suffering from kite malfunctions.

On the second last work the breeze was up to mid twenties and we had to run the Grotto to Manly gybe leg again. The wind had shifted left a bit and made it an easier gybe.

The final work back to Watsons Bay for the finish was just hard work.

Hughie has his fun with the fleet.

Results:
Division 1
On scratch, IRC and PHS it was Zen from MRZ with Wailea third.

Division 2
On PHS it was Another Dilemma from Contentious and 2Xcess.

Division 3
On PHS it was In The Red from Twitcher with Impeccable third.

Let’s hope Hughie is a bit more thoughtful next week.
