With the start of the 48th biennial Newport Bermuda Race just over over a month away, skippers and crews of the 170+ entries are certainly busy making preparations for their 635-mile ocean adventure. Boats are getting their final safety checks by the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) volunteer inspectors. Owners are busy completing documents due by the upcoming May 15th deadline. It’s a mad dash to make the thrash.

The 2012 Newport Bermuda Race starts on June 15th off Castle Hill, Newport, RI and finishes several days later off St. David’s Lighthouse, Bermuda.

John Osmond, Newport Bermuda’s 2012 Race Chairman expects another exciting race. 'The Yachts that will race in the Newport Bermuda Race 2012 are a very impressive fleet,' he commented. 'Each Division and Class will participate in a tradition that spans 106 years of ocean racing and adventure. This 2012 fleet will compete with the very elite of offshore sailing teams.'

Osmond urged all Captains to review their entry forms and requirements and to consult the race’s website, for alerts and to review the calendar.

'The Organizing Committee comprised of members of the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club remains committed to providing the safest, fairest, most competitive experience possible for our sailing friends.' Osmond added.

Busy now with collecting last minute forms, lists and certificates, Brin Ford, the data management chairman, has his hands full. 'We now have 170 boats with approved applications for entry and one still waiting for approval.'

'For the five racing divisions we have 95 in the ‘amateur’ St. David’s Lighthouse Division, 17 in the ‘professional’ Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division, 33 in the Cruiser Division, 19 in the Double Handed Division and 5 in the Open Division. Five boats have not indicated their division choice yet.'

The Spirit of Bermuda, the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s sail-training schooner, is sailing in the new Spirit of Tradition Division. She is the only traditional designed vessel to enter in 2012.

'There are a lot of details for owners to complete before the deadline next week.' Ford added. 'We’ll have a rush of submittals including everything from shore-side contact information to complete crew lists to rating certificates. ISAF Sailor classifications are required as well. Onion Patch Series entries are accepted up until the week if the New York Yacht Club’s 158th Annual Regatta.'

The winners of the last three St. David's Lighthouse trophies are returning. Peter S. Rebovich's 2006 and 2008 winner Sinn Fein, from Perth Amboy, N.J., will be back with her usual crew. Rives Potts' 2010 winner Carina is sprinting to Newport from Australia, where she sailed the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in December. By the time of the race start Carina will have sailed more than 30,000 miles since the 2010 race.

Joseph Mele’s Triple Lindy, a Swan 44 MkII, from New York NY tacks for the finish line off of St. David’s Lighthouse in the 2010 Newport Bermuda Race. Triple Lindy came 4th in class 3 and 15th in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division. Mele’s Swan will join 94 other entries in the division for 2012. -  Charles Anderson   Click Here to view large photo

About 40 boats included in both Newport Bermuda Lighthouse Divisions are expected to sail the entire Onion Patch Series. That five-race series begins with two races of the New York Yacht Club 158th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex, includes the Newport Bermuda Race, and concludes with the two-race Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Anniversary Regatta presented by Butterfield Group.

The RBYC Anniversary Regatta is open to all boats in Bermuda over 27 feet with a valid IRC certificate. Information is online here. Enter the series or the Anniversary Regatta from the New York Yacht Club site.
