Top of The Gulf Regatta - Sensational start for Easy Tiger Racing
|
In the 2012 Top of The Gulf Regatta, The Ferret powered by Easy Tiger Racing had a cracker of a day clocking up a third and a bullet in the highly contested one design Platu class. In 15 knots of breeze Nataya, skippered by Rolf Heemskerk got off to a strong start with a first in Race 1 followed by Short Time, skippered by Ian Short and The Ferret powered by Easy Tiger Racing, skippered by Chris Way in third. In Race 2, The Ferret lead off the start line and dominated in gusting conditions that peaked at 25 knots between rain squalls and lumpy sees to claim victory from Nataya in second and Naiad, skippered by Chai Weiguo in third. 'We had a solid day today. We got a third in the first race after our main halyard let go which cost us dearly but we managed to recover well with a bullet in the second, the 20 nautical mile long race, which we led from start to finish. We are currently in second place overall on four points behind Rolf,' The Ferret's Skipper Chris Way said. Rolf Heemskerk on Nataya is leading with a 1, 2 and tomorrow's schedule is for three more windward/leeward races which the rest of the series will consist of. 'Rolf is very good and we've beaten him before in races, but we need to stay consistently ahead throughout the regatta. It certainly doesn't help when your main comes down a foot on the first beat. Today the brains trust onboard was a well-oiled team.' Young Tiger and mainsheet hand Tom Spithill said the second race today was a real highlight. 'We got a good start and led the fleet to the desirable left hand side of the track and Pete Winter picked a good layline. We led the fleet around the top mark and sailed a course that involved reaching around an island to the finish line. It was a bit of a soldiers course - but suited us because we were in the lead,' Spithill said. Platu 25 Coronation Cup Results
