Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship 2012 first final of the 14 regional finals kicks off in Plymouth on 5th May. Young powerboaters from across the country are revving their engines and honing their skills, ready to compete for the 2012 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship title this weekend.

The Honda RYA Youth RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) Championship, sponsored by Honda and Ribcraft is Britain’s leading programme introducing 8-16 year olds to powerboating and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers.

Competing in two age groups (8-12 and 13-16) youngsters have to manoeuvre the powerful RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) around a predetermined course in the fastest time against the clock. The course includes slalom, demonstrating skill and control, stop exercise and 3600 reverse before a quick blast to the finish line.

Competition has been fierce in previous seasons, with only seconds separating the competitors as they head to the national final, which this year will be held on 16 September at the Southampton Boat Show.

'We are very excited about the 2012 Championship and are expecting the standard of competition to be extremely high. The Championship brings huge value in terms of introducing kids to powerboats, training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers, as well as providing clubs with a stream of highly-skilled safety boat drivers and support crews' explains Andrew Norton, Director of the event.

Last year it was a clean sweep for Parkstone Yacht Club and the Southern Region as the competition saw twelve year old Harrison Faull and sixteen year old Ben Edwards blasting their way to championship glory.

Now in its 11th year, finalists will be battling it out on the water in the hope of taking home a fantastic prize for their clubs. In the 8-12 age group the championship winner will receive a Honwave T40 RIB with a Honda BF20 engine, whilst in the 13-16 age group the winner a 4.8m Ribcraft RIB with a Honda BF60 engine.

David Hodgkinson, Marketing Communications Manager for event sponsor Honda said: 'Honda strives to be ‘a company that society wants to exist’, and so as a major manufacturer of engines and inflatables we are delighted to be sponsoring the 11th year of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship. Inspiring and encouraging young people to discover and pursue a passion for boating, is as important as giving them the skills to do so in a safe and responsible way. We are proud together with the RYA to be doing both through this unique competition'.

Thanks to Championship sponsors Honda and Ribcraft.
