Navigation change at Windang Channel, Lake Illawarra

NSW Transport Roads and Maritime services is warning boaters that the navigation at Windang Channel, Lake Illawarra has changed.

Maritime South Coast Acting Regional Manager Graeme Dunlavie said navigating in the waterway – upstream from Bevans Island to the entrance to Lake Illawarra - required extreme caution due to possible shoaling and variation of the seabed in the area.

Shoaling occurs when surface waves entering shallower water increase in wave height.

'Navigation markers have been recently adjusted to demonstrate the most likely safe passage through the channel,' Mr Dunlavie said.

'However, the availability of sufficient depth of water cannot be assured.'

'Skippers should exercise extreme caution when navigating through Windang Channel,' he said.
