Snow on Mount Wellington and a temperature in Hobart that ranged between 10 and 11 degrees (the wind factor on the river reducing it to 7-8 degrees) today failed to detract 78 hardy sailors from contesting the Derwent Sailing Squadron’s autumn short-handed series.

Each boat crewed by two just sailors, 39 boats raced in five divisions over windward/leeward courses in this second of five Sunday autumn race days.

Division 1 saw Fred Barrett’s 6.5m sports boat, Fang to the Max, record its second consecutive win on corrected time from another sports boat, Steve Harrison’s WA Cromarty Engineering, third place going to Saga (Chris Sheehan).

Greg Biskup also notched up a consecutive with Vistula in Division 5, winning from Elliott 3 (Jory Linscott) and Street Car (Peter Bingham).

The flukey breeze on the river produced some upsets. In Division 3 for the SB3 class, State champion Nick Rogers could only a manage a sixth with his newly launched boat, Toll Shipping. Victory went to class newcomer Andrew Blakney in Wicked from Balios (Peter Langford) and Hypotronics (Stephen Catchpool).

In Division 2 Gary Kennedy’s Pierette improved on its third last weekend with a close corrected time win from Just Jones (Peter Giblin) and Wildfire (Jon Ettershank).

Quebrada (Tim Maddock) also improved a third last weekend to win Division 4 yesterday from Serenity (Graham Hall) and Portobello (Ian Johnston).
