42nd Corsair Australian Titles venue announced

The 2012 Corsair Australian Championships will be hosted by Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club at Boreen Point from the 30th of September to the fifth of October this year. The class has enjoyed a long history with LCSC, with the club last hosting the Nationals in 03/04 and annually handing out the Corsair Cup as a part of the Mono Masters regatta every December.
Last year’s Nationals were a wild ride at Wangi Wangi in New South Wales, culminating in a thirty five knot plus westerly in which only one boat remained upright! That boat was 'Tenacious,' skippered by Aaron Hunt, and it will return this year to defend the National Title against former Australian Champions and placegetters, as well as some committed locals who have helped make the event possible.
This crew were able to clinch the title last year in a boat that was purchased for less than $1000 and hit the start line after several work hours the night before the First heat. Competitive boats are readily found for Sale on the Associations Website and Corsairs sit in garages and back yards across the country ready to be whipped in regatta shape in what is surely the cheapest way to get you and two mates, two kids or any combination of persons out on the water.
The top four crews in last year’s championship featured a mix of young and middle aged guys and girls as well as children and teens. The odd ninety year old has been known to venture onto the course to show the young ones a thing or two about sailing!
The last Nationals held in Queensland were the 2010 event at the Whitsunday Sailing Club where a local crew including rising star Klaus Lorenz were able to take a close third behind the top entry from NSW, Deciduous. That regatta was a marked success both on and off the water and the same spirit of fun and good sailing is the goal for the 42nd Nationals up at ‘the Lake.’
There are many social activities planned for the week at both the Yacht Club and at the popular Apollonian Hotel, family involvement being key to the Corsair Class’s continued existence, promoting kids and families to get out on the water for a good time and good class racing in a friendly environment. So if you’ve got a Corsair sitting idly in your back yard, or maybe want to get your kids of just about any age into the sport, why don’t you Go Sailing, Go Corsair!
