'Tasmanian Anna Vaughan - Laser 4.7 and Standard Youth Worlds'
The championship was contested by 117 teenage sailors from around the world and ended today after 12 races on the muddy, sometimes fast running River Plate. Winds over the week ranged from 6 to 18 knots.
The light winds suited 16-year-old Anna Vaughan and she won two races early in the regatta, at one stage holding equal first and second positions in the 46 boat girls fleet.
Anna won the first and fifth races in light to moderate breezes, but as the winds strengthened later in the regatta, the lightweight lass from Hobart found the conditions difficult. The final day saw her finish 23rd in the 46 boat fleet in race 11, then suffer a disqualification in the final race.
She was still top placed Australian in both the girls and boys championships, with Victorian Jack Felsenthall placing eighth in the boys gold fleet.
The girls championship went to Norway's Celune Herud from sailors from Spain and Croatia.
Of the other Australian girls, Anna Philip from Victoria also won a heat and finished fourth in the final race to be 10th overall, while Jaciinta Ainsworth from NSW placed 16th overall. The other Tasmanian girl, Madeline Salter, placed 30th, finishing 20th and 16th on the final day.
In the boys gold championship, Jack Felsenthal from Victoria won a heat but slipped to eighth overall with a 22nd and a 17th on the final day.
Hungarian sailor Benjamin Vadnal won the boys championship, winning two races and never once finishing worse than 10th.
Australia had an outstanding day of sailing ion day three of the championships, sailed on the River Plate, with Anna Vaughan, Anna Philip and Jack Felsenthal each winning a race.
