Sandringham Yacht Club Centenary Trophy - Entries welcome

Following on from its successful Centenary Regatta last year, Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne will host the Club Marine SYC Centenary Trophy on Saturday, 28 April, on the waters of Port Phillip. Sandringham Yacht Club invites all boating enthusiasts from around Victoria to participate.

The one day event comes on the back of last year’s Centenary event at SYC, in which over 100 boats took part. 'It was so successful, the Club decided to make it an annual event to mark the end of the Summer season, spokesman Ashley Trebilcock said.

Entry is open to IRC, AMS and PHS yachts, along with the J24 one-design keelboats, to compete in a number of fleet racing events, as well as all other vessels interested in participating in a family-friendly rally style event.

The event will be run across several courses on Port Phillip, in the vicinity of SYC, with IRC and AMS yachts to get away first from 10.00am. 'There’ll be something to please everyone,' Trebilcock said. 'Not everyone wants to race hard at this end of the season, so the pursuit start event will be a bit more laidback to include cruisers and a non-spinnaker division,' he said.

Bill Stubbs, Club Captain Recreational Boating at SYC, will be adding something more casual and relaxing for recreational boaters (power and sail) in the style of a family-friendly rally. 'We’re looking forward to a good showing from the strong fleet of J24’s in the Bay; they always guarantee tight racing,' Trebilcock added. 'One of SYC’s strategic pillars is to offer on-water events that give variety and maximise participation. This regatta is one of the key elements to achieving this aim; not only for Club members, but the boating community of Port Phillip at large,' SYC’s Club Captain of Sail, Mark Welsh added.

As a bonus to SYC members, those already entered into any of the Club’s pointscore series’ will be given free entry.

'But we welcome all boat owners to come along and enjoy the day, including those from other clubs around the bay,' Trebilcock said.

Multiple races in the IRC and AMS divisions will likely take part on short and sharp windward/leeward courses, while the PHS and pursuit boats will sail a longer one-off race.
