Tasmanian sailor Anna Vaughan is sharing the lead after the first day of sailing in the International Laser 4.7 world youth championships at Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 16-year-old member of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania Dinghy Group won the opening race and finished second in heat two to share the lead with Celine Herud from Norway. A fleet of 46 girls from 20 different nations are contested the championships with boys sailing in a separate fleet. Her father, RYCT member Michael Vaughan reported that the first day of racing was held with gentle breezes that clearly suited Anna. 'Anna led the first race from start to finish, increasing her lead at each mark. There was plenty of current for the first race, but not too many waves. Anna won by over a minute,' Michael said. 'Later in the afternoon the second race was run in similar conditions. Anna came second with Celine turning the tables. Anna led to the top mark and then extended her lead to the wing mark, but Celine got past Anna on the downwind leg. 'during the next two legs Anna steadily caught up, but was not able to get past. The leading two finished well clear of the rest of the fleet.' The other Australian girls in the fleet had a mixed day. Jacinta Ainsworth (Qld) is 14th overall and the second placed under-16 sailor. She had placings of 16 and 13. Other Australian placings were: Anna Philip (Vic, 25th), Cassandra Schlimbach (ACT, 29th), Elyse Ainsworth (Qld, 37th). Maddie Salter, Tasmania's other competitor at the worlds is placed 41st, having found the light conditions tricky. The Australian boys had a reasonable day with Jack Felsenthal (Vic) 15th and Ben Hartnett (Vic) 18th.
