A fleet of boats descended on the waters at Largs, on the West Coast of Scotland, this past weekend, as the second RYA Scotland MalinWaters Spring Championships were underway. This was a great spectacle to see, as racing classes included everything from Optimists, 420s, Fevas and even windsurfing. Although unfortunately due to low winds on the Sunday, racing only took place on the Saturday. Catriona McLeod was there from Scottish Enterprise, on behalf of MalinWatters, for the prize-giving ceremony which took place on Sunday afternoon. It was a great result for young sailors, most of which are in RYA Scotland National Junior and Youth Squads. Jennifer Abraham and Emily McCall, from Helensburgh SC and Annandale SC, were placed first in the 420 fleet. They are both currently part of the RYA Scotland National Youth Squad in the 420 Squad. Kellie Carmichael (17), from Annandale Sailing Club, and Jamie Noyes, Royal Forth Yacht Club, were placed first in the 29er fleet. Kellie was also the winner of the RYA Scotland Young Volunteer of the Year Award this year. Kellie and Jamie are also both currently part of the RYA Scotland National Youth Squad, in the 29er Squad. 'It was great to see so many 29ers out on the water. There was a wide range of experience and ability which provided good racing for all', Kellie Carmichael on the atmosphere at the regatta. Andrew Brown from Loch Insh Monsters, who are part of Team 15, a nationwide network of windsurfing clubs, came first in the BIC TECHNO 6.8 Fleet. Lori Provan from Clyde Cursing Club followed in second place. Both of whom are currently part of the RYA Scotland windsurfing squad. 13 year old Jamie Calder from loch Tummel SC and Royal Forth YC, was placed first in the Optimist fleet. Jamie is part of the Optimist National Junior Squad as well as being part of RYA Scotland’s Elite Programme. Jamie was followed by fellow Junior Squad member Niccolo Vetta in second place. However it was not only the young sailors that took the Gold this weekend, in the Solo fleet, 49 year old David Sword from Loch Tummel SC, came in first. Stuart Gibson, from Clyde Cruising Club, followed in second place. Overall it was a good weekend had by competitors of all ages and sailing abilities, and particularly good for RYA Scotland’s squad divisions. There are high hopes for the competition to increase in participation even more in years to come, as well as having the addition of a disabled sailing fleet with the help of Sailability Scotland.
