2012 RS:X World Championships come to a close

'Jessica Crisp on day three of the 2012 RSX World Championships'    Vincenzo Baglione

Australian windsurfer Jessica Crisp has finished 14th overall at the 2012 RS:X World Championships in Cadiz, Spain, after the final two days of racing were cancelled due to heavy winds.

Gusts up towards 40 knots kept the 120 male and 80 female competitors onshore on Tuesday and Wednesday with French sailor Julien Bontemps claiming the men’s title and Lee Korzits of Israel the women’s.

In the class’ final World Championship before the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games the heavy winds restricted the gold fleets to just 10 races with three days lost over the week. Crisp, who will compete at her fourth straight Olympic Games in London, finished up in 14th position, with her best race result being a third place on the opening day.

Crisp will now return home to Australia to train before returning to Europe to compete in a number of ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas to finish off her preparations for London 2012.

In the men’s fleet Luke Baillie was the top placed Australian in 58th overall with the Queenslander picking up valuable experience racing against the best windsurfers in the world in the gold fleet.

Fellow Australians Jimmy Levy and Patrick Vos were in the silver fleet, finishing 78th and 97th respectively, with the silver fleet only able to complete six races during the event due to the strong winds.
