Sunday Early Points Series at Lymington Town SC

'John Cooper & Becci Wigley - Race 4 of the Sunday Early Points Series 2012'    Barry Sticklen
The Sunday Early Points Series, organised by Lymington Town Sailing Club, runs on Sunday mornings from February 26th through to April 22nd. The fourth race of the series was held on Sunday 18th March 2012.

In bright sunshine and with the promise of a moderate NW breeze, 21 competitors set off for a start out in the Solent. Minutes before the scheduled start the wind backed to the SW and increased. A new course was then laid by the RO Nigel Walbank. With the ebb tide pushing the fleet forward, the fast fleet saw two boats over the line, the RS 400 of John Cooper and Becci Wigley and the RS 800 of Richard and Fiona Mayo. Both realised there error and returned to start correctly but their fortunes for the rest of the race were to be very different. The medium fleet got away cleanly after watching the problems of the fast.

Both fleets made quick progress to their allotted windward marks, both fleets then headed inshore to cheat the tide only to run out of wind as clouds pushed the N wind off the shore. This was to be the pattern for the rest of the racing as the wind came and went, alternating between SW and N. Gennakers were up and down and the B14 of Declan Clamp and Gary Stones found themselves a long way out in front but not knowing the course!

In the medium fleet the RS 100 of Richard Russell also pulled well ahead at one stage but the fleets kept on bunching up as the wind came and went. With two laps completed by the leaders the tale ends of both fleets were finished using the average lap procedures. The leading boats went on to eventually complete a third lap but only after they had again parked for ten minutes when the wind again switched off close to the shore.

When the handicaps were applied Cooper and Wigley prevailed in the fast fleet with second and third places being taken by two of the boats that had only completed two laps. In the medium fleet Russell was not quite able to save his time from the Blaze of Miles Mence with another Blaze of Ian Sanderson taking third slot.
