'Dave Cornthwaite - now for the sailing adventure'
.
|
Yesterday British adventurer Dave Cornthwaite set off under sail across the Pacific from Cabo in Mexico to Hawaii. This is journey No. 5 of Expedition1000's planned 25 adventures all via non-motorized transport. Joining forces with Pangea Exploration's 72 foot sailboat the Sea Dragon, Dave will be able to use this experience as a test for a future mission: rowing solo across an ocean. This journey is expected to take just over two weeks with the Sea Dragon and crew arriving in Hawaii around the first of April.
 | Sea Dragon - ideal ocean going vessel for the journey - .. . | He has already completed a world record skateboard across the length of Australia and tandem bicycled from Vancouver to Las Vegas. He was the first person to skateboard the length of Britain, has kayaked the length of Australia's Murray River and is the UK Aquaskipper champion. Why is he doing it? Well, apart from having a little fun, he is attempting to raise $1.5 million for two charities; the AV Foundation and CoppaFeel in the course of completing his record setting journeys. There will be 12 crew on this voyage. Probably one of the most improbable aspects of the voyage is that Dave recruited ten complete strangers to join him, all via the power of social media, using his Expedition1000 Facebook page and his Twitter account. Each of these crew members bring a special skill to the adventure, from the analysis of pollution in the water to video editing for the trip documentary. Let's hope they will all have special skills of compatibility as well. 'The voyage' he said, 'fits perfectly into my Expedition1000 plan. It’s over 1000 miles and doesn’t involve a motor. And what’s more, it would be a great opportunity to experience open water before a more arduous solo test in a rowboat.' This journey also hopes to be an educational forum. 'We’re planning a series of workshops and lectures for the voyage, which are designed to promote a greater understanding of the ocean environment and also richly compliment our self-contained world for 15 days.' | Sea Dragon in preparation mode - .. . | So they hope to spread not only the experiences of adventure but also the environmental issues the oceans are facing and the increasing responsibilities of the younger generation to get involved to make a difference.
