Datchet Water Sailing Club
The UK Flying Fifteen Open Circuit kicked off in sunny style at Datchet Water Sailing Club, where racing was for the Mercedes Trophy, Race Officer Phil Tinsley reports.

The day dawned warm and occasionally sunny, with at least some wind. Phil Tinsley (the VC) was PRO, and at the briefing suggested he would run four races back to back, using a shorter than usual course in the light winds, as the forecast for Sunday was less encouraging. 17 boats came to the event, 10 locals, seven visitors…

First race saw a lively start, with a strong showing from Ian Linder sailing with his daughter (her first race in an FF!), who rounded the top mark first and were never headed! Brett Dingwall sailing with Jonathan Clark was second on the first lap, hounded by Datchet boats Firth/Mumford and Wright/O’Neill. By the end of the run, Kneller/Lucas from Grafham has slipped through into second, which they held to the end. Behind them, Bayliss/Wilson came in third, and Warples/Stowe fourth, and Dingwall/Clark hung on for fifth.

The second race saw Kneller/Lucas round the top mark in the lead, which they held until the finish. The Waples’ – Justin in 3954 and Chris in 3994 (hot from the Dinghy Show) swapped places throughout the race, Chris triumphing this time. Dingwall/Clark were a solid fourth, with Datchet Fleet Captain John Hanson and Duncan Barr fifth.

With another quick turn round, the third race saw Apthorp/Green grab the race by the scruff, and lead all the way around. Kneller/Lucas confirmed their overall lead by sailing up from fourth to second at the finish; Chris Waples slipped back from second to seventh, allowing Dingwall/Clark into third, Hansen/Barr fourth and Ian Linder fifth.

After three races, Kneller/Lucas led by three points from Dingwall/Clark.

Last race in glorious late pm sunshine, saw Firth/Mumford lead at the nearly all the way around for a splendid win, Jones/Shawyer were second/sixth/first and finished fourth in the end. Inevitably Kneller/Lucas came second, with Dingwall/Clark third and Apthorp/Green fifth.

After a long afternoon’s racing, the very consistent Kneller/Lucas led by five points from Dingwall/Clark and Apthorp/Green in third. The improving Firth/Mumford are fourth and Linder and the start crew of the day Steffi fifth.
