2012 Hong Kong Interschools Sailing Festival - what a blast!

The 2012 Interschool Sailing Festival attracted 150 sailors across 20 teams. As in past years, teams were split into two divisions sailing a round-robin format to decide who would qualify for the third and fourth match and the finals.
Saturday’s conditions were tough, with gusty shifting winds on the race area just in front of RHKYC’s Middle Island clubhouse. There wasn’t much the weekend’s Race Officer, Sofia Mascia, could do about the 180 degree windshifts but nonetheless made the best compromise available in setting the course and ensured racing got underway.
During the day there were at least five or six gusts that did cause half of the fleet to capsize at the same time, but the skilled sailors righted the boats quickly, and if you weren’t looking you missed all the excitement. Despite the difficult conditions, 52 races were completed on Saturday and after a tough day on the water, sailors and volunteers feasted on the free lasagna, ensuring that they would have the energy for the next day’s racing.
At the completion of day one, it was French International School out in front in Division A and Chiu Lat Sau Memorial Secondary School led Division B.
Day two brought similar conditions first thing but without large gusts. Racing got underway shortly after 1000hrs with race 53. The sailors were rewarded with sunshine and a much more stable wind as the day progressed. Race 90 was completed by 1330hrs and that meant the round robin stage was complete for both divisions.
In Division A, KGV and Hong Kong Sea School were tied on 8 races so qualified for the final best-of-three race match. South Island School qualified in third while French International claimed fourth place only after tie break rules were applied with Island School and Kellett School who were also on the equal number of race wins.
In Division B, Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School finished the round robin in first place without losing a single race, while Hong Kong Sea School A team were second, West Island School third and Hong Kong Sea School B fourth.
After a short lunch break the playoff and finals got under way in ideal conditions. Racing was close in both divisions with the playoff between South Island School and French International School particularly exciting. Hong Kong Sea School were very efficient with their team racing and secured two race wins over KGV to win Division A. Meanwhile in Division B West Island School beat Hong Kong Sea School B team to take third place and Hong Kong Sea School A team secured a close victory to finish as Division B champions over Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School.
RHKYC Sailing Development Manager, Richard Knight said 'despite the weather on the first day, we managed to get in 52 races and on the second day reached 100 races for the first time in this event’s 10 year history. Everyone has had a great time and my thanks go to the Race Officer and all the helpers involved.
