'Whistler has won both the AMS and IRC categories of Hobart’s Combined Clubs Series'

Combined Clubs Long Race Series, conducted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, concluded today, Saturday 3rd March 2012, with the 40 nautical mile Green Island Race.
Tasmania’s top performing yacht in the 67th Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, Whistler, has won both the AMS and IRC category pointscores.
Whistler, a MBD 35 skippered by David Rees from the RYCT, finished 10th overall and second in her division of the Sydney Hobart. Today she notched up a third in AMS corrected time results and a second in IRC to clinch these Group 1 categories of the six-race series sailed in Southern Tasmanian waters over the summer.
Whistler took out the AMS pointscore for the Combined Clubs Series with four points from Tony Harman’s Masquerade (BYC) on nine points and Archie (Todd Sproule) from the DSS on 10 points. In the IRC pointscore, Whistler also finished with four points, Archie nine and David Taylor’s Pisces (RYCT) with 11 points.
The PHS pointscore went to Peter Haros’ Wings Three (DSS) with 10 points, just beating Masquerade (BYC) on 11 points with Whistler (RYCT) third on 17 points.
The Combined Clubs Long Race Series was run as part of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s traditional Green Island Race down the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, with overall first place overall going to Justin Barr’s Farr 1104 Rumbeat (RYCT).

Tony Lyall’s Transpac 52 Cougar II (RYCT) took line honours by only three-and-a-half minutes from Andrew Hunn’s Cape/Barrett 40 Mr Kite (RYCT), after recovering from a badly misjudged start in the light winds and outgoing tide that saw her caught on the wrong side of the line.
Cougar II lost almost four minutes in returning to re-start, as did the Archie. Both quickly made up ground once they re-started and headed off in pursuit of the fleet has it sailed slowly down the Derwent before a six knot northerly breeze.
Stand-out performance in Group 1 in the Green Island Race was that of Archie, which won both the AMS and IRC divisions. In AMS, Archie won from Masquerade and Whistler, in IRC she won from Whistler and David Taylor’s Pisces (RYCT).
Winner of Group 1 of the Green Island Race under PHS scoring was the one-off entry, Eliza, from Wings Three and Tilt (Peter Cretan).
In Group 2, Steward Geeves’ Footloose(RYCT) won under AMS scoring from Trouble (Dave Willans, BYC)) and Moonshadow (Anthony Ellis, DSS) while Justin Barr’s Rumbeat (RYCT) won the PHS category from Miss Conduct (Brian Fleming, RYCT) and Atilla (John Hunn, DSS).
The Group 2 AMS pointscore went to Footloose on a countback from Dave Willans’ Trouble (BYC), both finishing the series on five points the syndicate-owned Easy Street (BYC) on 13 points.
Trouble won Group 2 PHS with 10 points, second place going to Atilla (John Hunn) on 18 points, on a countback from Rouseabout (Grahame Inglis).
In Group 3, Julius Szolvik’s Folkboat Tihany (RYCT) won her division today to clinch the Combined Clubs series. In the Green Island race she won from Quebrada (Tim Maddock, RYCT) and Ragtime (Tom Kirkland, RYCT), which took line honours.
Tihany took out Group 3 of the Combined Clubs Long Race Series with a net six points from Steve Mannering’s Camlet Way (BYC) on eight points and Take Five (Ian Gannon, DSS) on 14 points.
