Geographe Bay turns it on for the last day

'Hugh Warner’s Classic Attitude. - Redink Homes Geographe Bay Race Week'    Bernie Kaaks - copyright

The vast majority of sailors in this week’s Redink Homes Geographe Bay Race Week finished the final race with huge smiles. The Bay turned on a 15 to 20 knot southerly at the start of the race, giving the well sailed yachts a real blast and causing mayhem among some of the lest experienced.

In IRC Blue, Black Betty turned the windward mark for the first run, which took her near the start line where following fleets were milling around awaiting their start signal, at around 18 knots – unfortunately much too fast for our little camera boat to catch them in action! A radio call from the yacht alerted the waiting fleets to the imminent arrival of the IRC boats and they quickly scattered for safety. Black Betty continued her fine form with her fifth win out of 10 races to comfortable clinch the championship with 11 points, ahead of Tony Carter’s Just Cruisin’ with 19 and Craig Carter’s Hoodoo Man on 23. This was Carter’s first hit out in a regatta and he should be pleased with the yacht’s potential.

Peter Hickson’s Beneteau 35 Mulberry has been the boat to beat all week, and chalked up another win in the final race, helping him to the series win ahead of Brad Skeggs in another 34.7, Mind’s Eye. 'The fastest Adams 10 in the world' (their description, not mine!) Rottnest Express Addams Family, sailed a very consistent series to finish third.
Paralympic gold medallist Graeme Martin, sailing with brother Peter and John Homes, blitzed the jib and main fleet with four wins from 6 races. Des Lord’s Figaro was next, followed by Gary Griffiths’ Heaven Can Wait.

In the multihulls, Allanah Chesterfield-Evans sailed Cosmic Gift to victory. Although the multihull fleet was smaller than usual, they enjoyed good racing. Forte was second and Dulcinea, third.

Premier Blue produced some of the closest racing in the regatta. There were recalls, protests and action a-plenty right up to the final day. Bunbury yachts eventually claimed the quinella. David Clifton’s Eftel had a nervous wait after damaging its mainsail just before the start, but the lead was big enough to retain her place at the top of the table with 15.5 points, ahead of Greg Lowe and Ray LeGuiere’s Fat Wallet Lost with 19. Graham Bishop sailed well all week to snatch third place with 21 points.

Premier Green was also close. The points table from second to seventh covered just 2 ½ points! After two disappointing races prior to the last day which saw her slip from the top of her fleet, Nexus returned to form to finish second in her final outing and win her division. Golden Eagle was second and Bunbury yacht Tokoloshe was consistent all week to finish third.

Local yachts dominated the Under 10 Metre division. Peter Godley, sailing The Jean Genie on behalf of on-water race director Ken Waller finished first, followed by wine maker Mark Blizard in Ziggy Stardust. Narrowly missing second place on a countback, the East Fremantle yacht Double Vision sailed by Graeme Cole, was third.

The sports boats loved yesterday’s conditions, with the possible exception of Terry Foster’s Fizz, which had to be towed back to harbour after breaking a rudder. They enjoyed some spectacular rides in the fresh breeze and the domination of the Viper 640’s in this regatta continued. Rod Beurteaux topped the fleet with 11 points, followed by Chris O’Keefe’s Snake Charmer. Sam Monkhouse and his very young crew from South of Perth Yacht Club finished a creditable third. With legends like Peter Chappell, Rod Beurteaux and Peter Sorensen in the fleet, Sam’s performance suggested that he has a bright future ahead of him.
