15th Asian Sailing Champs, 2012: a view from the shore

It has been a fabulous Championship, with over 217 competitors and 17 nations participating, with challenging conditions such as sporadic wind shifts, very strong currents and extremely hot weather. It was frequently difficult for competitors to hold their place on the start line due to the strength of the current threatening to push them over, but of course everyone had the same racing conditions and faced the same difficulties. The Championship offered a practice day, then six days racing with two races per day, and a lay day. Many of the competitors arrived ahead of time to familiarize themselves with the water and racing conditions.
Hong Kong had a strong team ranging across several of the classes, and a great team spirit was evident, with all the sailors supporting each other. The coaches across all the Hong Kong Clubs pulled together, working as a team and giving information and help to all the competitors, and our team leader Warwick Downes helped with advice, strategic information, organisational proceedings and much more.
A great time was had by all, and it is certainly a Championship we would look to compete in on an ongoing basis.

XSF Women’s windsurfing 3rd place Lydia Chau Kin Ching
2nd place Sonia Lo Sin Lam
Mistral Men’s Category 3rd place Kong Chin Lam
1st place Ma Yik Kau
Mistral Women’s Category third place Law Chin Yin
2nd place Ma Ka Him
29er 1st place Nathan Bradley and Cosmas Grelon
Laser Radial 1st place Nagisa Sakai
Hobie 16 2nd place Tong Kit and Tong Shing
Additionally, Sophie Tulloch achieved a respectable 14th place in the very competitive Girls’ Optimist Fleet, and Clara Krantz and Jacqueline Truhol finished in ninth place overall competing in their first Championship together in a 420. Dominic Hardoon completed his first large international regatta in a Laser Standard, finishing in seventh place, and Mike Halkes achieved fifth place in the hugely competitive 470 fleet - well done, and much deserved congratulations to all.
