M.V. Big Cat is one of the first vessels to complete a major refit at BSE Cairns Slipways since the company changed hands early this month.

BSE Project Manager, Simon Pedley, said 'It is great to see local tourism businesses utilising the facility and taking advantage of the undercover work areas available on site at this time of year.'

As part of their ongoing maintenance program the Big Cat vessel was taken out of the water for a major refit in one of BSE’s fully enclosed refit sheds, spending over $500,000 in the process.

The main generator was replaced along with the internal fan units for the air-conditioning systems. The hull under the waterline was repainted and the main engines, gearboxes and shafts all received an overhaul and service.

The windows in the wheelhouse and main cabin have been replaced and all windows have been tinted. BSE also repainted the stripes, polished the aluminium, added new bright stickers and repainted all the decks and the galley.

When asked about the extent of the refit Steve Davies, General Manager of Operations said 'There is always a lot of expense and time spent on things you can’t see but this refit we also had a lot of cosmetic work done. It is great to have something to show for all our hard work and money spent!'

Big Cat returns to its normal service in Cairns on Tuesday 28 February.
