The oldest junior match racing championship will take place at Balboa Yacht Club July 17-22. The Governors Cup has been a pathway for champions as its alumni have gone on to participate in exclusive events such as the America’s Cup and the World Match Racing Tour. The Governor's Cup committee is currently soliciting entries from both the United States and abroad for the 46th year of the event. Past participants include teams from Australia, New Zealand and England. Competitors will be racing identical purpose built Governor's Cup 21’s provided by the Newport Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association. This boat was designed by renowned yacht designer and BYC member, Alan Andrews. Teams will consist of a skipper and two crews. No competitor may have reached his or her twenty first birthday before the first day of the regatta on July 17, 2012. Balboa Yacht Club’s selection committee will select final invitees from among clubs submitting a complete Request for Invitation package by Friday May 11, 2012. Subsidies to assist with travel expense and provided through the generosity of some of the sponsors may be granted at the discretion of the Selection Committee which may be in part based on need. More details are available in the application materials. Among the highlights of the event will be the presence of the America’s Cup trophy, opening dinner, big boat 'Beer Can' racing, and the Gala Trophy Reception. It is the committee’s ambition to make this the most enjoyable event that the competitors have ever experienced. The entire Balboa Yacht Club family joins together in various volunteer capacities to host this terrific event. Housing is provided by BYC families who also help teams familiarize themselves with the city of Newport Beach and its attractions. For more information or to request an Invitation Package, please call 949-673-3515 or via email sailing(at)balboayachtclub.com. The package is also available for download on the Club’s website
