Variety Port Jackson Championships to help raise Alopecia awareness

Lincoln Crowne & Company is working to help raise awareness of Alopecia Areata, a serious medical condition that results in its sufferers traumatically and without explanation suddenly losing their scalp and body hair, by undertaking a series of initiatives.

These commence with the inaugural Variety Port Jackson Championships on March 11th, 2012 which will see a fleet of approximately fifteen 12 foot skiffs set sail on Sydney Harbour, for an action packed
short-course event.

The event is set to raise money for Alopecia Areata, for which there is currently no known cause or cure. Variety, the leading Australian children’s charity, fund human hair suction wigs for children who have lost their hair due to Alopecia Areata. The wigs are unique in that a suction mechanism allows individuals to go swimming and play sport without the wig falling off. For kids with Alopecia, these wigs make it possible to do everything and anything other kids do and do wonders for helping restore their self-esteem. However, as they are made from real human hair, take many hours to manufacture and require 16-19 ponytails to make just one wig, each one costs around $3,000.

The event was initiated after Lincoln Crowne & Company (LCC) sponsored the 12ft NSW State Championships late last year, as well as having sponsored a 12ft Skiff sailing out of Woollahra for the past few seasons, and a 16ft Skiff sailing out of Manly. LCC’S Director, Nicholas Assef has sought to support charities and philanthropic initiatives for the last decade and his latest partnership with Variety and the 12ft Skiff Association aims to build awareness and raise money for the incurable condition. Nicholas also contracted Alopecia Universalis – an extreme version of the Areata condition, approximately five years ago, and so understands the many personal issues that sufferers have to deal with on a daily basis.

The 12ft skiff is a lightweight open class, two man high performance sailing boat, which has a long tradition on Sydney Harbour. It is a development class that is sailed in NSW, QLD and New Zealand. Technological advancements in design and building techniques, sophisticated sail and hull designs, and the advantage of a- symmetrical spinnakers, have allowed modern-day 12ft Skiffs to evolve into one of the most spectacular classes on the water.

The public are encouraged to watch the race at a host of key vantage points, including Nielsen Park and Steele Point, as well as The Woollahra Sailing Club, who are hosting the event and post-race presentation.

CEO of Variety, the children’s charity, David Small is thrilled to have the support of Nicholas Assef and Lincoln Crowne & Company and the 12ft Skiff Association when it comes to this serious condition, explaining, 'Alopecia Areata is a growing problem for children in Australia. Losing their hair not only leads to self-esteem issues but bullying by other children. The Variety Suction Human Hair wigs are virtually undetectable and enable these kids to participate in sport and life in general without the worry of a standard wig coming or being pulled from their head.'
