Redink Homes Geographe Bay Race Week 2012. Before the start of yesterday’s night race, the Beneteau First 40 Just Cruisin sailed close behind the transom of the start boat Challenger to register for the race.
Unfortunately, at the precise moment it passed, Challenger (a 42 foot ex cray boat) reversed whilst setting her anchor. The steel duckboard proved more than a match for a fibreglass hull and Just Cruisin limped away from the encounter with a long gouge just above the waterline on the starboard side.
Undeterred, the crew patched the hole with sticky back and proceeded with their best start of the series so far. A series of minor mishaps and a protest earlier in the day, caused Just Cruisin to slip from the top of the leader board and they were determined to put it behind them in the night race. The yacht rounded the top mark close behind the GP42 Black Betty and came home with a second place on IRC corrected time.
'We went out there rigged for light weather,' skipper Tony Carter said. 'The breeze kicked in to 20 knots, the water was flat and the deck stayed dry all night. It was a brilliant night!'
In the IRC White fleet, Peter Hickson’s Beneteau 34.7 Mulberry enjoyed a wonderful day out, claiming a second and a first in the windward/leeward races held in the morning and also winning the night race. The performance puts her at the top of the points table.

Cruising divisions enjoyed a leisurely passage race finishing with a barbecue at the Dunsborough Yacht Club – the first time that the fledgeling club has been involved in the regatta.
In the sports boats, Rod Beurteaux continues to dominate with this Viper Don’t Forget Alice. In a race which should have finished early in the afternoon, the fleet struggled through fickle light winds and barely made it home for afternoon tea. Beurteaux took the win ahead of tyro Sam Monkhouse and his young crew sailing another Viper, Hissteria.
