Adelaide to Lincoln Yacht Race - Return of Secret Men’s Business 3.5

'Secret Men’s Business 3.5 comes off the start line - Lexus Lincoln Week Regatta 2012'    Bob Ross/Port Lincoln Yacht Club

Lexus Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race 2012 starts off Port Adelaide on Friday 17th February. Geoff Boettcher’s 2010 Rolex Sydney-Hobart race-winning team returns to serious offshore racing with Secret Men’s Business 3.5 in the Lexus Adelaide to Lincoln race.

Boettcher, from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, refreshed after a lay-off through the summer season, is back in 'business' with an ambitious program that will include the Hobart race and far beyond, to Britain’s classic, the Rolex Fastnet race.

'We would like to put her on a ship and do the Fastnet,' he says. 'That’s a little goal for 2013.'

For the Adelaide to Lincoln and the Lexus Lincoln Week regatta, which follows, Boettcher has added some new lightweight sails from Doyle to SMB 3.5’s inventory. His crew will include most of his Adelaide regulars.

The Reichel/Pugh 51 faces some tough competition in the fleet of 60 entered for the Adelaide-Lincoln race.

Back for more is Rob Date’s Riechel/Pugh 52 Scarlet Runner from Sandringham YC, first to finish last year’s Lexus Adelaide to Lincoln for the second year in a row. Her elapsed time of 12 hours three minutes broke the record held by SMB 3.5 for the 150n mile course by two hours and 20 minutes.

She also won the IRC division and went on to beat Secret Men’s Business 3.5 on a placings countback, after they tied on points, in the Lexus Lincoln Week regatta.

The 2009 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Tattersall’s Cup winner, from the CYCSA, Andrew Saies’ Beneteau First 40 Two True, is again contesting the Adelaide to Lincoln race.

A strong first-time entry from Sydney is Darryl Hodgkinson’s Beneteau First 45 Victoire, winner of the 2011-12 season Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Blue Water points score after winning IRC div 3 in the 2011 Rolex Sydney-Hobart race.

Another well-performed Beneteau First 45 in the fleet is Reverie (Alan Woodward), from Royal Brighton Yacht Club, returning after finishing second to Secret Men’s Business 3.5 on IRC handicap in the 2009 Lexus Adelaide to Lincoln race. She went on to win the IRC division of the Lexus Lincoln Week regatta that year.

Race and regatta chairman Steve Kemp, who also somehow find time to navigate Secret Men’s Business, is gratified by the 60-boat entry for the race and 40 boats for Lincoln Week.

He says that the forecast of predominantly fresh sou’-easters promises a very quick race. 'The first boat could break the record,' he says.

The forecast for Gulf of St Vincent waters is for 10-15 knot SSE breeze increasing to 15-20 during the afternoon; SE 15-20 in Investigator Strait between Kangaroo Island and the Yorke Peninsula, easing to 5-10 during the evening.
