'Class Regatta Port Shelter 2012'

This year, the Class Regatta Port Shelter, organized by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and presented by Jeanneau, got off to a slow start, with Race Officer Andrew Taylor struggling to find sufficient breeze to set the two races the fleet was expecting.
Instead, a shortened course for Race 1 was all that could be accomplished, and competitors were shown an early route to the bar, with fingers crossed that Sunday would offer better fare.
This morning’s breakfast view at RHKYC’s Shelter Cove clubhouse was of a mill pond, but Race Officer Russ Parker went out beyond the Port Shelter pale to find eight to nine knots of swinging northerly and wasted no time in getting the 43 boats off on a short, sharp, two lap, windward leeward race.
With the first race in the bag, Parker decided 'if it ain’t broke … set the same course again', and both the long and short course fleets rattled off the third race to ensure that there was a Regatta.
As the sun broke through, Parker decided to ring the changes for the third race of the day, setting three laps, with the Long Course fleet of Sportsboats and J/80’s earning a general recall for a burst of over-enthusiasm.
In spite of a lull at the first leeward mark, the breeze held to give everyone a finish, with the exception of Gambit and May 13, who had failed to return after being called OCS.
Three races down, and it was still only 1400hrs, so the RO opted to run an additional race to make up for the loss of Race 2 the previous day. All went smoothly, and competitors headed back to shore safe in the knowledge that they now had a discard to play with.
At a packed prizegiving, Craig Bright of Gafencu presented the Class prizes, while Don Chow of China Pacific Marine handed out the Short Course awards and Paul Blanc of Jeanneau Asia Pacific awarded the Long Course prizes. For full results, click here.
